The Marshall County Board Of Education met on Monday Nov. 13 at 6:00 p.m. Recognitions were first with Sarah Holliman, a senior at Cornersville High School. Holliman was recognized for her perfect score on the English portion of the ACT test. Debbie Gage, a former educator, was also recognized. Gage is a FAFSA Advisor for all the high schools in Marshall County.
The lease agreement was renewed for $2,500 for the Chapel Hill Lion’s Club Athletic Field. Committee Reports were moved to December’s Board of Education Meeting following the regularly scheduled meeting.
Interscholastic Athletics Policy 4.301 was discussed. The policy concerns unruly behavior at all sporting events. All voting members were in favor of amending the policy to make the person(s) responsible for unruly behaviors financially responsible for the fines associated with TSSAA rulings, versus the school and/or Board being held responsible.
The 2024-2025 School Year Calendar passed.
All voting members were in favor of a resolution concerning a grant for the following three items: playground equipment for special education pre-k students, additional security cameras at all schools, and repairs at Forrest High School to HVAC and bleachers.
MCHS bleachers were next on the agenda. Hussey Seating Company out of Maine provided two options to replace the bleachers: with the MCHS logo and colors-approx. $330,500 and without the MCHS logo and colors-approx. 328,000. Both options come with end curtains to prevent litter and people from going underneath or on the sides of the bleachers.
The next agenda item listed was “request for reconsideration of library materials.” The initial motion to accept the recommendation out of committee was made but it failed to get a second meaning the motion failed. It was not voted on.
Robby Reasonover, Delk Henson Principal explained that currently, if students in the fourth to sixth grade want to check out these books, a parental guidance form is required every time it is checked out. Reasonover said he did research on surrounding areas regarding these books.
Board members discussed what is and is not appropriate for children at that age. After some discussion, a motion was made to remove all three books from the school and it was seconded. All members voted “aye” on the motion and it passed. The books the Board wants removed from Delk Henson are “The Sixth Man” by John Feinstein, “A High Five for Glenn Burke” by Phil Bildner, and “The List of Things That Will Not Change” by Rebecca Stead.
Director Jacob Sorrells gave his report before the meeting adjourned and reminded everyone to keep Roy Dukes’ family in their thoughts. Dukes has a long history in Marshall County schools system and is a valued member of the community.
The next meeting is Dec. 11 at 6:00 p.m. at 700 Jones Circle
