Cornersville Lady Bulldogs Regional Runners Up

O n Wednesday, March 4, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs competed against their same district rivals, the Richland Lady Raiders, in the regional tournament championship. It was a championship worthy game to be sure! The game was a back and forth competition from beginning to end. Both teams were suffocating on defense, which led to a low scoring game, but took nothing away from the excitement. Both teams were patient on offense as they methodically looked for the best way to break the other team›s defense and score. Foul trouble haunted the Lady Dawgs early as they put the Raiders on the line several times. Luckily, the Lady Raiders were a little off on the free throws for the night. At the end of the first half, the Dawgs were trailing by a score of 19-12.

Second half play continued to be a defensive brawl. The fouls seemed to be called a little unevenly and the Dawgs suffered by sending the Raiders to the line, where they continued to struggle to sink all their free throws. However, Cornersville began to dig their way back even with the Raiders. A big trey, at the last second, by Annamarie Cooper tied the game (27-27) at the end of the 2rd quarter. The final quarter was another slow one as both teams patiently worked to score. With 2:30 remaining to play, Richland led by 3 and were content to hold the ball till time expired. The Dawgs had two opportunities from stolen balls, but missed the opportunity to score (once by a missed layup and once because of a foul by Richland). A couple last minute scores by Richland, and fouls sending them to the free throw line, helped them extend the lead just out of the reach of the Lady Dawgs, 39-33.

Scorers on the night included Annamarie Cooper with 11 points, Emma Kate Dunivan with 9 points, 7 points for Camile Franklin, 4 points for Abigail Finley, and Faith Eguia added 2 points to the Dawgs’ total.

The Bulldogs traveled to Wayne County on Saturday evening, March 7th to begin their substate run.
