Columbia State Accepting Summer and Fall 2026 Applications
(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – March 23, 2026) — Columbia State Community College’s summer semester begins May 27, and important application deadlines are fast approaching for new and returning students.

‘Mrs. Gilbert Shining Star Award’
O ak Grove Elementary announces their recipients of the “Mrs. Gilbert Shining Star Award” for the 2025-2026 school year. This award is given in honor and memory of Mrs. Shawn Gilbert, 1st grade teacher. Mrs. Gilbert was a “Shining Star” to those whose lives she touched. She was a shining example of living a life filled with love, joy, and service to others. These students were chosen for exhibiting those same qualities. Congratulations to these wonderful students.

Spot Lowe Students Demonstrate Technical Excellence at SkillsU SA State Conference
F ifteen students representing the Spot Lowe Technology Center distinguished themselves at the SkillsUSA Tennessee State Leadership and Skills Conference held March 15-18. Joining a field of over 1,800 peers at the Chattanooga Convention Center, the Marshall County delegation competed in 13 specialized categories, securing medals in seven of them.

Six Scholarships Offered
T he Marshall County Retired Teachers Association is offering up to six $1,000 scholarships to students planning to go into the teaching profession. One scholarship is for high school seniors planning to major in the field of teaching. The other scholarship is for upcoming college juniors and seniors who are majoring in education. Either application can be picked up at any of the three county high school guidance departments. Scholarship applications are also on the school websites. The deadline for application submission is Monday, April 20, 2026.

2026 Marshall County Duck River Education Day Essay winner-Logan Raymer
O n Friday February 27, 2026, the Friends of Henry Horton, TDEC (Henry Horton State Park Rangers), GM and WM had a celebration for the 2026 Marshall County Duck River Education Day Essay winner Logan Raymer. Logan is a 5th grader at Westhills Elementary School in Mrs. Perry’s class.

H ave you ever seen one of the most biodiverse rivers in the world? I have! Introducing the Duck River! My class took a field trip to the Duck River to learn about the importance of the river and how we all have a responsibility to take care of it. Turbidity, pH, and macroinvertebrates are some of the things that people test in the Duck River. There are a lot of ways of helping or checking the Duck River, including recycling.
