Tigers, Lady “Dawgs win Wells Cup

One thing the high school golf season brings about is the Wells Cup tournament, which is a three-day event between Marshall County, Forrest and Cornersville High Schools.
Last week, the three schools met at Henry Horton, the Lewisburg Recreation Center and concluded the tournament at Saddle Creek.
In the end, the Marshall County Tigers posted the best team score and it was the Cornersville Lady ‘Dawgs taking the team wins.
On Day 1 of the tournament at the Lewisburg Recreation Center, Marshall County held a slim, six-stroke lead over Forrest.
Ronan Scott shot a round-best 40 to lead the Tigers, while Khalil Hill turned in a 44.
John Michael Darnell finished his round with a 46, while Eli Cross finished his first round with a 48.
Luke Perry’s scored a team-best 44 and had the Rockets within six strokes of the Tigers’ lead following Day 1.
Keaton Gillette finished a stroke back from Perry at 45 and Travis Porter shot a 46.
John David King and Houston Matlock each shot a 49.
For Cornersville, Rylan Davis posted the best round of the day for the Bulldogs with a 52.
Marshall County extended its lead in the second day at Henry Horton, posting a winning 170 final score, while Forrest finished with a 182.
Scott was red-hot on the course in Chapel Hill and shot a 36, while Hill finished with a 43.
Darnell finished with a 44 while Cross turned in a 48.
Perry once again led the Rockets with a 41 and Gillette followed with a 45.
Tyler Tackett and Houston Matlock shot a 48 and 47, respectively.
Davis again led Cornersville with a 55.
In the final day, held at Saddle Creek, Marshall County completed its run in the tournament by posting a 184 to finish the three-day tournament with a 532.
Scott shot a 43 to finish his three-day run as the medalist with a total of 119.
Forrest finished second in the event with a 562 an Cornersville finished with a three-day total of 707.
On the girls’ side of the Wells Cup, it was Cornersville who turned in a winning score of 298, while Forrest finished second with a 358.
Marshall County was unable to field enough golfers to turn in a complete score.
Nellie Neece burst out of the gates and shot a 38 for Marshall County to jump up the individual leaderboard for the Tigerettes.
Eliza Nelson and Charlotte Liggett shot a 47 and 55 for Cornersville to post a 102 on Day 1 at the Lewisburg Rec Center.
Lainey Duvall shot a 60 to lead the Lady Rockets to a 122 on Day 1 as well.
Nance followed up on Day 2 at Henry Horton and shot a 41 to lead all scorers, while Cornersville combined for a 93 team score.
Nelson finished three strokes back from Nance and shot a 44, while Liggett turned in a 49.
Adriana DeHoyos shot a 56 to lead the Lady Rockets on Day 2.
Neece wrapped up her medalist honors with a 39 on Day 3 at Saddle Creek and Cornersville turned in a 103 team score to take the team competition.
Nelson shot a 51 to lead Cornersville while Liggett finished with a 52.
DeHoyos shot a 60 to lead Forrest for the second-straight day.
