LEWISBURG — Two big innings by Marshall County ultimately was enough to outlast a late-game surge by county rival Cornersville on Tuesday night.
The Tigerettes got big production in the first and third innings and held off the Lady ‘Dawgs for the 10-8 win.
Zakiya Taylor plated the first run of the game when she scored on a wild pitch and two more runs scored on a Lady ‘Dawg error later in the inning.
Emma Ward then scored for the Lady ‘Dawgs in the top of the second on a Tigerette error.
Things continued to tilt in favor of Marshall County in the six-run third frame.
A fourth Tigerette run crossed the plate on a Cornersville error and Marshall County followed with four-straight base hits, including back-to-back RBIs by Taylor and Demiyah Blackman.
Abby Leverette then laid down a perfect sac-bunt, scoring Taylor and bumping the Marshall County lead to 8-1, before Reese Lentz drove home the final run of the inning on a double to right.
While the Tigerettes did the bulk of their damage by the third inning, Cornersville responded in the fourth and began chipping into the sizable Marshall County lead.
Carmen Ward singled to lead off the Lady ‘Dawg fourth and Molly Wells plated two more runs with one swing of the bat on a two-run shot over the center field fence.
Ward added another run in the fifth on a RBI double.
Things got interesting in the sixth inning as Cornersville was able to plate four more runs to pull within one.
With two outs, Abbi Storey smoked a line drive single to center field, driving home three more runs for the Lady ‘Dawgs.
Storey later scored on a Tigerette error to make the score 9-8 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
With the late push by Cornersville, Marshall County answered the four-run sixth with one insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, which scored Jachelle Ridley when Anna Stewart ground out to second.
Cornersville belted out nine hits on Tuesday and was led by Storey, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Wells’ homer was the biggest hit of the night for either team.
For the Tigerettes, four different players recorded two hits, including Taylor, Blackman, Ridley and Stewart.
Leverette went 5 2/3 innings in the pitcher’s circle to take the win for Marshall County.
She gave up seven runs on eight hits, while she struck out one.
Jayli Childress gave up 10 runs on 12 hits, only two of which were earned, while striking out one.
