Jan. 4, 1999 Tennessee won the 1998 National Championship, the first for the Vols since 1951.

Jan. 5, 1908 First woman sworn into TN House of Representatives-Frankie Pierce. She went on to successfully fundraise and create “The Tennessee Vocational School for Colored Girls,” (precursor to Tennessee State University).

Jan. 5, 1836 Davy Crockett delivered his famous “Not Yours to Give” speech in Washington, D.C.

Jan. 7, 1789 Tennessee became the first state in the union to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

Jan. 7, 1927 The historic Ryman Auditorium held its first radio broadcast featuring a live performance by Grand Ole Opry icon DeFord Bailey.

Jan. 7, 1967 The first Waffle House restaurant in Tennessee opened.

Jan. 8, 1919 Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.

Jan. 9, 1951, WTVF-TV, the first commercial television station in the state, went on the air.

Jan. 9, 1866 Fisk University opened in Nashville.

Jan. 10, 1963 A small plane carrying Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, and Hawkshaw Hawkins crashed near Camden, Tennessee, killing all three musicians and the pilot.
