CHAPEL HILL —The Forrest Rockets (4-4, 1-2) had a four-game win streak in the middle of the season, but have since dropped three-straight.
Since August, Forrest head coach Eli Stephenson has made it clear that the Rockets have to keep their composure in order to win ball games.
Playing as one unit and cutting out non-effort penalties will be key in finishing the regular season on a winning note.
“We have to play discipline football,” said Stephenson. “Our effort is there, but we are making too many mental mistakes.”
After three-straight losses, the Rockets spent this Friday on a bye week, and Stephenson says their main focus has been getting mentally and physically healthy.
The Rockets will finish out their regular season with two tough games, this Friday night taking on the Moore County Raiders, who remain undefeated this season.
To slow down their offense, Stephenson reiterates the importance of reducing penalties.
“We have to play assignment football. The defense has to swarm the ball, and the offense has to cut out the pre-snap and post-snap penalties.”
After a tough Moore County team, Forrest will travel to Fayetteville, their final region matchup of the season.
Stephenson is looking for his team to fire on all cylinders and build momentum entering the playoffs.
The Forrest Rocket defense has been solid all season, led by a pack of seniors.
Carson Yates returned from the injured list two weeks ago, adding to the already stellar blockade.
The Rocket offense cannot be overlooked, with a laundry list of players who can carry the ball on any given night.
Senior Liam Bell brings solid leadership and consistent play each week, while also relying on sophomore brother Eli Bell to come alongside him to move the chains.
Freshman Fletcher Fields started as the Rocket secret weapon that’s probably not such a secret anymore, but brings fiery energy and consistency.
Brothers Gavin and Cohen Grissom, kicker and punter respectively, also know how to gain some yards.
They each have stepped up to help the offense in a greater capacity this season.
Coach Stephenson is looking to his team to play together on both sides of the ball.
“When we play together, we are a tough team to beat,” said Stephenson. “I am looking for the team to play together the next two games.”
The Rockets will host Moore County this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
