Programs for New and Established Farmers in February

Posted on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 9:00 am

This February the UT Extension office in Marshall County will be working with surrounding counties to offer two great learning opportunities for local residents to take advantage of.

The first of these two classes are called Master Farm Manager. This class focuses on the business side of farming. Several important topics are covered in this class including farm taxes, making a farm business plan and farm insurance. This class is great for both established farmers and beginning farmers to take due to the wealth of knowledge that they will gain about setting up the business side of the farm. In today’s world farmers need to be knowledgeable about how to turn their farming operation into a successful business that they can pass along to other family members if they wish to. These classes will be taught by both extension professionals and industry professionals. These classes will be held on Tuesday, February 6th, 13th and 20th at the Lincoln County Extension office and on February 27th and March 5th at the Lincoln County Farm Bureau building.  The fee to attend this class is $125 or $150 for couples. Classes will start at 6:30 pm.

The second class is designed for new and beginning farmers. This class is called Farming Fundamentals and focuses on topics that new farmers need to know. This class will touch on a variety of topics that include farm business planning, livestock nutrition, marketing, weed control, fence laws and much more. This class is a great way for new farmers to get some broad knowledge about farming in general and also getting to meet with Extension professional’s that can be a valuable asset as they continue farming. The Farming Fundamentals class will be held on Thursday nights starting on February 8th and it will rotate between 4 local counties. Producers taking the class will start in Lawrence County on the 8th, the 15th will be held in Marshall County, then the 22nd will move to Maury County and on the 29th we will finish in Giles County. These classes will also introduce producers to the Ag Research Stations in Marshall and Maury County’s. These classes will be held from 5pm-8pm and dinner will be provided for each meeting. The fee to attend this class is $125 and an additional $50 for each guest attending.
