CHAPEL HILL — It took extra innings, but in the end, the No. 1 ranked Class 1A and two-time defending state champion Eagleville Eagles escaped Chapel Hill in a 4-3 thriller against the Forrest Rockets.
Carter Walk put the Rockets up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single to right and Eagleville later evened the game in the top of the fourth on a dropped third strike.
While Forrest was able to record the out at first, Eagleville’s Marshall Spann scampered home to score the tying run.
The Eagles eventually took the lead on RBI single in the top of the sixth.
The 2-1 Eagleville lead didn’t hold long, however.
Tyler Baxter singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and Brennan Mealer drew a walk to put two on with no outs.
A Preston Gentry sac-bunt scored Baxter and a Branham Haynes single later in the inning gave the Rockets a 3-2 lead over the Eagles.
A two-out RBI single by Eagleville’s Josh Jeffcoat tied the game at three in the top of the seventh and a 1-2-3 seventh for the Rockets forced extra innings.
Eagleville led off the eighth with back-to-back sin
