Nathaniel Ogilvie Murrey, known to many as “Nat” or “Uncle Nat” and to some as “Oge”, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on January 7, 2025. He was 96 years old.
Nathaniel was born May 8, 1928, in the family home place known as Valley Farm near Cornersville, Tennessee, to William Preston Murrey, Sr. and Natalie Ogilvie Murrey. He attended Cornersville and Webb Schools before being accepted to Vanderbilt University. He graduated with a business degree. After graduation, he married Alice Wilkes Peebles. They later moved from Nashville to Lewisburg to raise three children and get started in the family insurance business with his father. Years hence, he added a realtor’s license to his repertoire and sold real estate. Being the entrepreneur that he was, he also ran a dairy farm and The Hut drive-through restaurant.
Nat was an avid golfer and enjoyed the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and boating, dancing and playing bridge. After retirement, he built a home on the Tennessee River which enabled him to do many of these things on a daily basis. His true love in life, however, was his family. Family was his heritage which he wholly embraced. He remained very close to his older siblings, Waverly Duning and Bill Murrey, until they died at the ages of 98 and 95, respectively. He loved his nephews and nieces like extended sons and daughters. He passed his love of family on down to his own children.
Nat was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister and brother, his wife of 41 years and his son, James McAden (Jim) Murrey. He leaves behind his son, Nathaniel Ogilvie (Gil) Murrey, Jr. of Cornersville and daughter, Hallie Murrey Bensinger of Pulaski; special friend, Patricia Milam and her son, Jamie Milam, of Clarksville, her three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and his beloved nieces and nephews with other family and friends too numerous to count.
A Celebration of Life will be held January 18, 2025, with visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. and service beginning at 3 p.m. at London Funeral Home, 324 W. Church Street, Lewisburg, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
