John Paul Murphy, 85, of Lewisburg, Tennessee, died Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at his residence.

He was born June 11, 1939, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the late John “Jack” and Helen Sullivan Murphy. He was a retired engineer and loved aviation, photography, working on his “farm”, his family, and his Irish heritage. He attended Merrimack College where he got his degree in Electrical Engineering and then business school at Vanderbilt which brought him to Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Sean Murphy, two sisters, Helen Miller and Mary Hannigan, and a brother, Tom Murphy.

He is survived by two sons, Mike Murphy of California and Matt Murphy of California; four grandchildren, Kyle Murphy, Sean Murphy, Devon Murphy, and Kendall Murphy, as well as his dear partner Jill and countless pilot, Elks Club, and lunch buddies in the great Lewisburg area.

John was known for his gentle big heart, even keel, willingness to help anyone, and dry Boston sense of humor. His first love was flying, a hobby he took up in his 20’s as a glider pilot at Eagleville airport. He later switched to a single engine plane which he kept at Lewisburg airport. He flew as often as he could and that was his happiest place. One of his favorite activities was flying to a spot for lunch with friends. He had an adventurous spirit that he imparted on all those around him. His sons remember him as a father, mentor, and friend who was always there for them. They always enjoyed his visits to California, sharing a steak, watching a football game, or just driving around to his favorite places.

A memorial and spreading of the ashes service will be held in the coming weeks.

London Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
