The Howard & Annette Lawrie Music Scholarship

Howard and Annette Lawrie were well-known for their musical talents as well as their involvement and commitment to the Lewisburg and Marshall County communities. In their memory, the Lawrie family wishes to honor their parents’ legacy and love of music by awarding this scholarship to a student who will pursue a degree in music or a music-related field, for example, music education, vocal or instrumental performance, or conducting.

Mrs. Lawrie loved accompanying the ‘human voice’ (soloists, choirs, and choruses) and found great joy in playing the organ for 60 years at First Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, retiring at age 90. She graduated from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago with a BS degree in Music, majoring in organ. Following graduation, she accompanied vocal performance students at Northwestern University and the Chicago Conservatory of Music, where she met Mr. Lawrie. Mrs. Lawrie taught piano and organ to countless students in the Lewisburg area and played for many family weddings, funerals, MCHS graduations, and choral performances, many of which were directed by Mr. Lawrie.

Mr. Lawrie was a talented trumpet player, band leader, and choral director with a gift of bringing out talent in others. He greatly enjoyed teaching brass and wind instruments to numerous students. Mr. Lawrie received his MS degree in music theory from the Chicago Conservatory of Music, where he continued his studies in trumpet and conducting. He was also the first music theory instructor at Columbia State Community College, band director at MCHS and choir director at First Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church in Lewisburg.

The Lawrie Family created the Howard and Annette Lawrie Music Scholarship and Grant Fund to honor their parents’ music legacy and involvement in the Lewisburg and Marshall County community. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Marshall County graduating senior or college student to further their educational and career goals in music or music-related fields. Donations may be made to the fund through the Marshall Education Foundation.

The Marshall Education Foundation was chartered in 2002 and strives to provide scholarships, grants and assistance to students and teachers in Marshall County.
