The Marshall County Ministerial Association and FCA joined together to put on a big event Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Marshall County High School Gymnasium. It all started with pizza – and a lot of it! There were 162 students registered beforehand but some came in late and missed registration. Estimated attendance this time 200+ students and close to 300 people in total.

Local schools were challenged to see who could bring the most students. Lewisburg had the most students there – around 33 percent. Cornersville accounted for about 21 percent and Chapel Hill was close behind with 19 percent. Other students from private schools and homeschools made up the rest. Lewisburg collected the trophy for most students and will retain it until the next Firth Wednesday event in January.

Kirk Shepard, Area Director of FCA for Marshall County and Maury County started the event with a friendly basketball contest on the court. Each school had a student come down as a volunteer for the basketball shoot. Once they got on the court, they had to pick two people they trusted. These two wound up being the volunteer’s guides because they would be shooting free throws while blindfolded! Chapel Hill won the boy’s blindfolded free throw contest. Cornersville won the girl’s blindfolded free throw contest.

Next was a 3-pointer contest with a student from Forrest, MCHS, and Cornersville. It was a lengthy game that resulted in a granny shot tie. Sounds crazy, but you needed to be there to understand it.

The youth praise and worship team led an interactive worship with great music before Shepard introduced Richard Garza as the speaker for the night. Garza spoke of his days in pro football, his time (over 20 years) as co-chaplain of the San Antonio Spurs, and even about ministering to men in prisons. Garza said, “When people ask me ‘Hey Garza how do you know you’re going to heaven,’ I tell them my faith is not in what I do or in what I did. My faith is in what He did on the cross. Faith in Jesus Christ alone, is never alone.”
