BELL BUCKLE — The Marshall County Tigers and Cornersville Bulldogs both saw their run in the dual team region tournament come to a close at Cascade last Thursday.
The Tigers took a tough one on the chin to eventual region champion Tullahoma, while Cornersville battled a feisty Cascade team, but fell 39-33.
Tullahoma defeated Marshall County, 67-12.
For the Tigers, just two wrestlers recorded wins against the Wildcats.
Anthony Smith pinned Tullahoma’s DeCarlos Slaughter in the third period for the first Tiger win of the match in the 215-pound weight class.
Later on in the match, Wyatt Jett also pinned Lukas Agnell in the third period of the 132-pound class match for the second Marshall County win of the evening.
While it was tough sledding for the Tigers, the Bulldogs found themselves in an all-out war on the mat against the Champions.
Xavier Viazcan recorded a hard-fought win via pin against Cascade’s Isaac Chapa in the 190-pound class, and after Cascade pulled ahead with back-to-back wins, it was Josh Bennett in the 120-pound class who pinned Cascade’s Terry Pilkington in the first period.
But following Bennett’s win, the Champs recorded three-straight wins, including two pins and a forfeit before Austin King got the Bulldogs back in the win column, pinning Trenton Giel in just 28 seconds.
Jonathan Zuniga followed with another quick pin, needing just 39 seconds to pin Dominic Sanchez in the 150-pound class.
The match hinged on the final two bouts of the match up and at the 157-pound class, Cascade’s Landon Kling won a 6-2 decision over Caden Bush to take a 39-30 lead with one match remaining.
In the final match, Joseph Cole recorded an 11-4 decision over Max Darefsky.
While Cornersville hung tough, Cascade scratched together just enough to advance to the region championship and sectional.
While the team portion for both Marshall County and Cornersville is over, the wrestling postseason will continue with the individual tournament.
