Marshall Medical Center hosts annual coaches’ clinic for Marshall County schools

LEWISBURG, Tenn — On July 23, Marshall Medical Center hosted its annual coaches clinic, a community event designed to educate coaches from the Marshall County School System. This year, the clinic hosted 21 participants.

Gregg Cloutier, the supervisor of athletic training at Marshall Medical Center Physical Therapy, founded this event in 2008 with a goal to provide coaches with current and trending knowledge on sports medicine and related topics, including Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) policies.

The athletic director at Marshall County High School, Kevin McGehee, praised the event’s impact, saying, “The coaches’ clinic is an invaluable resource. The training and knowledge shared equips our coaches with useful and up-to-date information, resources and tools to support student athletes. We’re grateful to Marshall Medical Center for their continued commitment to the community.”

This year’s clinic featured the following topics:

  • Hip Injuries: Zachary Pharr, MD, from Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance (TOA) of Columbia provided insights into common hip injuries in athletes and best practices for prevention and treatment.
  • Weightlifting Techniques: Major Tripp, CSCS, XPS, from Chadwick Fitness, demonstrated proper techniques to help athletes maximize strength while limiting injury.
  • Pre-Emergency Room Care: Amanda Cothran, MSN, RN, stroke/trauma/chest pain center coordinator at Maury Regional Health, discussed essential first-aid steps and care protocols to assist with injuries prior to professional medical intervention.
  • Leadership and Discipline: Staff Sergeants Christian Ramirez, Zachary Kleinfelder and Blake Schneeburger from the Tennessee National Guard shared strategies on fostering leadership and discipline among athletes.
  • Emergency Action Planning: Brad Rohling, MEd, ATC, athletic training coordinator from Rutherford County Schools, emphasized the importance of having emergency action plans in place and covered TSSAA policies.

The coaches’ clinic is an important in-service training opportunity, offering six hours of educational content to help coaches better serve their athletes. The event contributes to Maury Regional Health’s commitment to the health and wellness of southern Middle Tennessee.

Marshall Medical Center Physical Therapy offers physical, speech and occupational therapy programs for all ages designed to help patients recover following surgery, illness or accident or enhance function to improve their quality of life.
