Representatives from Calhoun Community College, Tanner, Ala., visited with the Advanced Manufacturing classes at Spot Lowe Technology Center on September 14th. Coordinated by instructor Danny Adams, his students learned about the programs of study at the two-year college, the FAME program, and financial aid information.
Recruiter Tanner Justice and Coordinator of Collaborative Programs Nathan Steele also brought with them four 2023 Marshall County graduates who shared their experiences about the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) program which combines an AAS Advanced Manufacturing Technician degree with two years of paid industry experience. The program prepares graduates to enter the workforce as in-demand, skilled, multi-crafted maintenance technicians.
Members of this year’s FAME cohort, were all Spot Lowe Technology Center students and included Michael Gregg (Forrest) who is working for YKTA in Madison, AL; Hudson Pate (Forrest), who is also working at YKTA; Dawson Collier (Cornersville), who is working at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Greenbrier, AL; and Juan Carlos Mejia (Marshall County), who is also employed by Mazda Toyota Manufacturing.
The five-semester program, which began in 2014, provides students with 2 days of school and 3 days of working at one of the 11 sponsor companies located in northern Alabama.
“This program is a good way for a student to get an education, earn a degree, graduate possibly debt-free, and then go to work,” stated Nathan, “the two years of industry experience can take them wherever they want to go.”
