Bette Ross, as she was known had a wonderful chemistry about her personality and it endured through her very special 91 years of life. Her family and friends young and old would say that she had an incredible ability that would ‘light up the room’ with her beauty, charm, and sense of fun. Bette Ross was an only child greatly loved by her mother and father. She was a wonderful and supportive mother to her only child and son, Ross. Lewisburg was her hometown, and there she had many friends where she graduated from Marshall County Senior High School in 1950.
She was musically gifted as a piano player, loved to sing, played all varieties of musical genres, and composed thoughtful and picturesque poetry. She had the opportunity to attend Blair School of Music but chose instead to follow her heart and marry Clarence Elvin White of Lewisburg, of White-Lowe Dry Cleaners the family business. Later in her life, she attended business college in Nashville, worked for Chancellor C. Allen High of Davidson County, and had an opportunity to run an entertainment business for Willie Nelson. Interestingly, she later worked as a clothes consultant at Dillard’s in Cool Springs, Tennessee. She later remarried the love of her life, Harold Sonny Jennings in 1974, and assisted in an award-winning brick laying construction business working throughout Davidson and Williamson Counties that displayed her creative designs. Of special note – when her husband became ill she was his caregiver and ran and directed the business from the jobsites herself.
Bette Ross attended Oak Valley Baptist Church in Franklin, Tennessee, along with her son, his wife and children, Emily and Charlie, whom she loved and doted on very much. She became ‘Mimi’ to them and they were always fascinated by their Mimi and the extraordinary person she was. She was a fantastic grandmother – she loved her grandchildren to the utmost. First with Emily, who she spent a lot of time helping to raise and then with Charlie eleven years later. The loving bond with her grandchildren was shown as exhibited when Emily would visit and with Charlie, who often would make secret trips just to see and talk to her while she was at the nursing home in Nashville. Much love and discussions were shared by all. It should be said that she loved the Good Lord had a great affinity for hearts and love and made that her personal symbol in life and even on her gravestone. She will be remembered always with great love by her family and friends.
