Mayor Keny and members of the Robert Lewis Chapter “Illuminate the Importance of Literacy.” The proclamation notes this is the 31st anniversary of National Family Literacy Day.

National Family Literacy Day is observed annually on November 1st to highlight the importance of reading and learning together as a family. It also serves as the kickoff for National Family Literacy Month, which takes place throughout November. The initiative was designated by Congress in 1994, with the support of the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL).

Studies have shown that a child’s success in reading and overall academic achievement is strongly linked to the literacy level and involvement of their parents or caregivers. National Family Literacy Day reinforces this connection by emphasizing how shared reading can:

  • Develop early language and literacy skills in children.
  • Strengthen family bonds through shared activities.
  • Improve children’s attention spans and listening skills.
  • Boost creativity and imagination.
  • Improve parents’ skills and foster a positive attitude toward learning.

Ways to celebrate

  • Read aloud as a family: Reading together strengthens bonds and builds a child’s vocabulary, listening, and comprehension skills.
  • Visit the library: Check out books together and help your child get their own library card.
  • Create a reading nook: Designate a special, cozy space in your home just for reading.
  • Listen to audiobooks: Enjoy stories together during car rides or while doing chores.
  • Play word games: Activities like Scrabble or having a family spelling bee can make learning fun.
  • Participate in local events: Many schools, libraries, and literacy organizations host special activities and book drives during November.
  • Post on social media: Use the hashtag #FamilyLiteracyDay to share your celebration with others.
