Democrat Meeting: February

TRACY HARRIS-Staff Writer

The Marshall County Democratic Party met Feb. 8. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. January 2024 minutes were approved. Chair Jess Limbird gave their report. The Party now has a post office box. The expense was $110 for one year.  There is still a need for a Treasurer.

The Party discussed the County Convention on March 16, Regional Convention on April 6, how to be a selector, and an overview of how the whole process works.

SB1934 and HB2043 would abolish the grocery tax for Tennesseans if passed. Two Nashville Democrats, District 51 Rep. Aftyn Behn and District 19 Sen. Charlane Oliver introduced the bills to the House and the Senate back in January. There was discussion about a statewide weekend of action on Feb 24-25 to canvass, inform citizens, and gather support for it. Action Network has a petition online for those unable to attend at actionnetwork.org/petitions/end-the-grocery-tax.

If any like-minded Democrats would like to serve in any capacity, the Treasurer is the biggest need right now. Limbird added that “there’s lots of work to be done, especially in an election year. We’re trying to hold a candidate forum in the spring, we want to campaign which requires door-knocking, and we really want to do a voters restoration event. We need more hands.”

The meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m. The Marshall County Democratic Party meets the second Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Marshall County Memorial Library. The next meeting will be March 14, 2024.
